Death, Taxes, and Content
There is the old saying that the only thing you can count on is death and taxes. I have a third event that you can predict with equal assurance: content is never as easy to generate as what clients think it will be.
If you are a client generating content, take whatever time you think you will need to generate content and triple it. Seriously. Unless you have a team of copywriters who are sitting around waiting for things to do, generating the content for an online project is much more difficult than what you think.
Here are some of the reasons:
- You don’t have as much content as you think, and you will end-up needing to compose more than what you expected.
- The content you have is not web-ready. It may be more difficult to convert offline content to the web than what what you might think.
- The content is outdated and you need to update it.
- More people will need to review the content than what you are expecting.
- You think you have time, but with all of the other work you have to do, tweaking or writing the content keeps getting pushed aside.
For all of those reasons, don’t underestimate the time and effort to generate content. Be conservative and if you are completed earlier than expected, you can revel in the fact that the project is ahead of schedule (at least as far as that task!).
